On November 13, 2017, Retired Lieutenant General Robert Lempke will be in Minden to present Jack Yant a Purple Heart award during the Minden Public Schools Veterans Day program. Yant was designated for the honor while serving in Vietnam 50 years ago, but receiving the medal has required some extra effort.
Yant volunteered for the draft in 1967. He spent one year serving in the 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry of the 4th Infantry Division. With a base in Pleiku, his unit fought in several battles in the central highlands and along the Cambodian border.
“I was hit with rocket shrapnel on the second day of the battle of Dak To. As the battle started, they fired rockets and I was hit from the shrapnel. They bandaged me up and I fought the whole night until the next morning when we defeated them,” Yant recalled.
