The State Cross Country Meet in Kearney on October 19 was the sight of some history being made. Making that history was Minden senior Aidan Wheelock, who earned his third straight Class C gold medal, the first ‘C’ male runner to capture three individual titles. Ten others had accomplished the feat twice, including former Whippet Alvaro Sanabria, who earned individual titles in 2006 and 2007.
Wheelock now becomes the fifth member of the very elite group of male runners in any class who have been three-time winners. That group includes Nate Nielsen of Lincoln Southeast, Aaron Carrizales of Morrill, Colby Wissel of Kearney and Matthew Barraza of Scottsbluff.
In addition to his three golds in a row, Aidan made some Minden CC history as the first boy to medal four straight years at state (he placed 14th his freshman year). Two girls had four-medal careers—Tracy Rehtus (1982-85) and Kelly Throener (1996-99).
