The Axtell boys finished in a two-way tie for fourth in Class D at the state track meet at Omaha Burke on May 19-20. The Cats, however, were one of at least five teams that had a shot at a team championship depending on the outcome of the meet’s last event—the 1600 meter relay.
As it was, the final order of finish found South Loup on top with 38, followed by Bruning-Davenport-Shickley (37), Exeter-Milligan (36), Axtell and Fullerton (35) and Mullen (33).
In the aforementioned relay, the Cats’ quartet of junior Braiden Gomez, junior Jarett Bertrand, freshman Tyler Danburg and sophomore Lane Bertrand finished a close second (3:33.8) to South Loup. Had that order been reversed Axtell would have tied for the ‘D’ team crown.
