East Elementary kindergarten and second grade students toured the Minden recycle center on May 12. Recycling staff Rod Shepherd and Lynda Stangl worked with East Elementary staff to coordinate the visit in an effort to bring more awareness to the recycling program in Minden.
“We thought it would be a good idea to bring them out there so they can see what happens to recycling and what it’s all about so they can go home and tell their parents,” Stangl said. “A lot of people don’t know what we do out there or where it goes so this gives them an idea.”
Students were guided through the facility where they got a close look at the compressors used by employees to prep recyclables for sale. They also got to see the machines in action and the bales of compressed cans, cardboard, and paper created by the compressors.
