The Minden High School class of 1967, Nebraska’s Centennial year, will be celebrating their 50th class reunion this weekend by offering a silent auction for pieces of art work to honor the first two art teachers for Minden High School, which had their class as students.
Kathleen Kuchar came to Minden in 1963 as the first full-time art instructor in the Minden public schools.  Virginia Johnson (now Wattles) taught the class of 1967 during their junior and senior years of high school.  Both went on to successful careers as art teachers and artists, Kuchar in Hays, Kansas, and Wattles in Kearney.  There will be over a dozen pieces of art available, including artworks by the two teachers.  Several of their students went on to teach art themselves and/or become artists, including Bonnie Burchell, Donna (Borgaard) Granger and Dorothy “Dodi” (Paulsen) Groesser.
Funds from the project will purchase the supplies needed to create a new portable, technically up-to-date, podium for the new high school.  The Class of 1967 yearbook shows a similar gift from the Class of 1958 used prominently in their graduation ceremonies and other events.  The new podium will be constructed and completed as a class project by Minden High School students in the woodworking skills class this coming school year.
