The Mud Bowl, The Wind/Rain Bowl, The Lightning Bowl—whatever one wants to call it, the game between Minden and Kearney Catholic on October 6 at Kuper Field was affected by the elements. The Stars prevailed over the Whippets 30-8 dropping Minden’s record to 1-6. The Whippets host Chase County (Imperial) on Friday in the final home contest of the season.
Minden moved the chains for a couple first downs on the game’s opening possession but was forced to punt. Kearney Catholic then went on an 11-play drive and scored on a three-yard run at 3:15. The added conversion kick made it 7-0.
To open the second period the Whippet offense held on to the ball for 17 plays, penetrating as far as the Stars’ 11 before ceding the ball over on downs. Alex Banuelos subsequently thwarted KC’s drive with an interception at the Whippets’ 16. A fumble on the first play, however, gave the ball right back to the Stars. Two plays later KC scored on a 14-yard pass play and got another conversion kick to make it 14-0 with just 22 seconds left in the half.
