Minden youth are proving that you’re never too young to have a positive impact. Students at East Elementary and the Awana Clubs recently raised money to help in the hurricane relief efforts in Texas and Puerto Rico.
Collection bags were set out in classrooms at East Elementary so students and staff could donate loose change. After a week of collections $350 was raised. Because the act of donating was teaching a valuable lesson in character, the Minden Whippet Pup Club matched the total and  $700 was sent to Orange County Texas to a school library destroyed by Hurricane Harvey.
East Elementary Principal Sandy Pohl contacted the teacher in Texas through a website recommended by the Nebraska Department of Education which connects schools in need across the country. It was important to Pohl that the donation benefit an individual in order to help show the students what their generosity accomplished.
