State champion again! Aidan Wheelock captured his second straight Class C state cross country gold medal on October 20 at the NSAA State Championships at the Kearney Country Club. The Whippet junior ran the 5k course in 16:44 and easily outdistanced Brian Santiago of Hartington-Newcastle by 25 seconds. Wheelock’s individual championship is the sixth overall for Minden and he joins Al Sanabria (2006-07) as two-time gold medalists. Dick Graham in 1974 and Lady Whippet Kelly Throener in 1998 were the other winners. As a freshman in 2015 Wheelock placed 14th.
Junior Jay Maska, making his third state meet appearance, finished 63rd in 19:16. A total of 95 boys competed in Class C. Holdrege, Ft. Calhoun and Hartington-Newcastle finished one-two-three in the team competition.
The Whippet girls finished 11th, just as they did a year ago. Holdrege, Ft. Calhoun and Adams Central were the top three teams.
