Improvements to City water were on the October 1 Minden City Council agenda in the form of a water main ice pigging project. Utility Superintendent Ryan Hurst explained how ice pigging water mains could improve water quality and flow and measure the effectiveness of current main cleaning practices.
Ice pigging is a fairly new technology that uses an ice slurry mix to clean the inside of water mains. Ice pigging has several advantages over traditional pigging which uses a solid abrasive object shaped like a pig. The slurry is more versatile, efficient, and won’t become stuck in the pipe leading to additional work.
The City has been using directional flushing to clean out water mains. Hurst told the council ice pigging after the recent directional flushing will help determine how effective the practice has been. He stated he didn’t believe directional flushing was useless, but it isn’t perfect either. The amount of sludge dislodged and expelled during the ice pigging of the proposed 4800 feet of water main will provide a better idea of whether it should be used on the rest of the City system.
