In the last three years, Teen After Hours events at Jensen Memorial Library have grown in popularity among Minden’s older youth. Library Director Janene Hill and Youth Services Specialist Mary Jo Froid offered some insight into their success by leading a session called ‘Fun, Easy, and Inexpensive Teen Nights’ at the Nebraska Library Association Annual Conference.
“It’s always a big discussion in the library world about how to get teenagers into your library and how to keep them coming back. We have a pretty good group of kids that come regularly to teen nights and we’ve been able to establish that with them so we thought we would share the knowledge,” Hill said.
The team began discussing the possibility of hosting a session soon after Froid attended her first conference. While discussing youth services with others at the event, she discovered many libraries are at a loss for how to engage teenagers.
