The high school basketball season doesn’t start for a little over a month but one might assume from the score of Wilcox-Hildreth’s 100-56 win over the Creek Valley Storm (Chappell/Lodgepole) in the first round of the six-man football playoffs that this was a game played on a hardwood court rather than a grass field. With the victory at Hildreth on October 26, the Falcons advanced to the next round on November 2 to take on 8-1 McCool Junction, a 48-8 winner over Sterling. Wilcox-Hildreth will again host, with the game slated to begin at 7:00. The winner will take on the winner of Harvard and Cody-Kilgore on November 9.
Although the Falcons led after the first quarter, Creek Valley actually had the lead twice in the opening period. The Storm scored first on a 25-yard run and kicked the conversion to go up 8-0. Then, as it did eight times in the game, the W-H offense needed just one play to strike. Bryce Tobiassen found Clayton Nichols for a 47-yard TD pass. Gruwell booted the conversion (the first of ten successful kicks for him, more on that later) to tie it up at 8-8. Creek Valley responded with a 13-yard TD run to go back ahead 14-8. Jenkins sprinted 36 yards to the end zone on the first play after the kickoff and Gruwell’s kick gave W-H its first lead 16-14. Jenkins had TD runs of 6 and 36 later in the period and one more Gruwell kick made it 30-14.
