With each week’s game, the challenge to advance in playoff football generally becomes a little tougher. But Wilcox-Hildreth has met and fended off all challengers, the latest being previously unscathed and top-ranked (although third-seeded) Harvard, as the Falcons won 63-50 in Harvard on November 9. W-H, now 11-0, faces one last obstacle to a state six-man championship, that being undefeated Hay Springs in the title game at the University of Nebraska-Kearney’s Foster Field on November 16. Hay Springs defeated Minatare 38-0 in its semifinal contest.
The foes literally traded touchdowns for the first ten scores of the game. This extended well into the third quarter and up to that point, the Falcons and Cards each had five TDs. But Harvard had the lead, 38-31, due to conversion points (eight for Harvard on four kicks, one for W-H on a pass). The Falcons then scored the next four TDs for a 19-point lead, essentially sewing up the victory.
The opening period ended with Harvard up 16-12. Jenkins got W-H on the board first with a 61-yard TD run on the game’s second play. The kick failed. Harvard answered with a 14-yard TD run and the conversion kick to lead 8-6. Jenkins then ran 54 yards for a TD on the first play after the kickoff but again the kick failed. The Cardinals closed out the first quarter scoring with a 27-yard pass and another conversion kick.
