The Minden Public Schools Board of Education met January 14 for their regular monthly meeting. Consideration of new vehicle purchases was the hot topic at the meeting.
Tyler Cox from Blue Bird attended the meeting to answer questions regarding two route bus proposals. One 47 passenger bus is diesel and the other is propane. The diesel fueled bus he told the board was in Grand Island ready to have lettering put on and can be delivered and put into service later in the week. The propane fueled bus will be custom built and would be delivered during the summer and ready to use for the next school year.
Cox detailed the benefits of using a propane fueled vehicle. While the fuel economy is slightly less than diesel, the cost of fuel and rebate from NDEQ offer a potential savings of $3,000 annually to the district. He also answered concerns the board had with difficulty in fueling and the safety of propane vehicles. He also told the board there is a grant available through NDEQ to assist in purchasing a propane bus.
