14th seeded Axtell was defeated by third seeded Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family 63-36 in the D1-3 district final at St. Paul on February 25 sending the Bulldogs to the state tournament and ending the Cats’ season at 13-12. The record was a noticeable improvement over the past two seasons. For seniors Creighton Kring, Lane Bertrand and Tanner Badura their high school careers conclude being part of a four-year record of 44-54 (22-5, 3-20, 6-17, 13-12). The Cats neither won nor lost more than two in a row at any time in the 2018-19 campaign.
Axtell led a couple of times early (5-3, 7-5) but ultimately H/LHF’s size, defensive pressure and offensive efficiency was difficult for the Cats to keep up with. The Bulldogs led 24-13 at the end of the first. Brennan Runge scored six (on a pair of threes) and Kring scored five in the period.
In the first five minutes of the second quarter H/LHF went on an 11-2 run and ended the period outscoring Axtell 16-6 for a halftime lead of 40-19. The Cats had shot well (8 of 14) in the first half but committed 16 turnovers during that time. Runge, Tyler Danburg and Zach Hinrichs (at the first half horn) hit buckets in the second.
