Severe weather can strike with little to no warning in the Midwest. Residents prepare for the worst with emergency supplies and plans for riding out dangerous weather. Emergency responders prepare with disaster drills.
“These drills improve coordination between multiple agencies as well as improving patient care. We have to do exercises from the top three risk factor scenarios to our area and weather and natural disasters top the list for us,” KCHS Safety Director Connie Linder said.
Kearney County Health Services and Minden EMS participated in the annual Kearney County Disaster Drill on April 17. Emergency responders received a call at 5:30 p.m. about a severe weather event resulting in mass casualties at the American Legion Park in Minden. Knowing a drill activity was scheduled for sometime during the month but unaware of details, the responders reported to the scene and began administering care as if a true disaster had struck.
