The America’s Farmers Grow Communities program, sponsored by Bayer Fund, partners with local farmers to provide grants to local nonprofits. One winner is selected annually in each of the eligible counties. Kearney County farmers Colin and Mary Schwenka were among the 2019 winners.
“They sent us a post card and I filled out the form online; it took less than a minute to apply. Any eligible farmer can apply for the award,” Mary said.
The Grow Communities program gives farmers a chance to win a $2,500 donation for their favorite community nonprofit organization. The Schwenkas are a driving force behind Minden Beef Boosters and they directed the donation to the organization which supports the recently implemented Nebraska Beef in Schools program in Minden. The funds will aid in the effort to continue including fresh, local beef in the Minden Public Schools lunch menu and  teaching students the importance of where their food comes from.
