When Ag Education and FFA were implemented in Axtell Community Schools last year, it was a long term goal to build a greenhouse for classroom and program use. That goal is well on its way to being realized with grant funding and community support.
“Rebecca Cornelius, the previous Ag instructor, filled out the grant application in the Spring of last year. Since they started the program, it’s always been on their mind that they wanted a greenhouse,” Ag instructor Kate Grimes said.
Grants totaling $35,000 have been awarded to Axtell FFA for the greenhouse project from America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education sponsored by the Bayer Fund, Nebraska FFA Foundation, and CPI. The grants are all designated to support local agricultural and STEM based education in the classroom.
