Axtell Area Oratorio Continues Messiah Tradition April 13th

The Axtell Area Oratorio Society will present selections from George Frideric Handel’s Messiah on April 13, 2014, 7:00 p.m. at the Merryman Performing Arts Center. An area tradition since 1958, the performance brings together the talents of several marvelous soloists, a chamber orchestra and a 70 member chorus, with Conductor J. Rodney Wendell.
The Axtell Area Oratorio Society evolved from the Axtell Master Singers, which was a group of musicians from the Axtell area who had a community choir that sang for various occasions in the 1950’s.
They first performed Handel’s Messiah in 1958 under the direction of Mr. Wendell. The first few concerts were given bi-annually and since the 1980’s it been performed as an annual concert on Palm Sunday.
Mr. Wendell has directed each concert, and there are several in the choir this year that sang in the 1958 concert. Also many have three generations of family members who participate.
An Axtell native, Mr. Wendell taught music in the Axtell school from 1950 to 1994. He holds memberships in numerous honorary and professional organizations and served on the Board of Directors of the Kearney
