Axtell’s boys will make a run at defending their Class D state track and field championship after a strong performance at the 12-team D-6 district meet at Sandy Creek on May 10. The Cats’ 147 points comfortably outdistanced Kenesaw (77.5), McCool Junction (62), BDS (57) and Wilcox-Hildreth (52).
The Axtell Lady Cats also had a commendable district showing finishing as the runners-up (98.5) to Giltner (119). Next in line were McCool Junction (59), Lawrence-Nelson (46) and Kenesaw (42.5). The W-H Lady Falcons were seventh with 34.
As was typical, leading the Axtell boys were Creighton Kring, Lane Bertrand and Lincoln Trent. Kring will attempt to repeat winning class gold in the long jump and triple jump (second in ’17) and he qualified as well in the 200 (third at state in ’18) and the 100. Bertrand returns as a leading contender in the 110 hurdles (third in ’18) and 300 hurdles (second in ’18, eighth in ’17). Trent returns to Omaha in the 3200 (third in ’18) and 1600 (did not place). Also qualifying for the Cats were Dustin Klingsporn in the pole vault (fifth in ’18); the 3200 relay with Calvin Johnson, Tom Peterson, Jake Wehrer and Zach Hinrichs; the 1600 relay with Bertrand, Johnson, Tyler Danburg and Trent; Johnson in the 800; Danburg in the 400; Hinrichs in the 1600 and Jaron Bergstrom and Elijah Lopez both in the 3200.
