Axtell Hike & Bike Trail Complete

In the fall of 2006 the Village of Axtell applied for grant money for their proposed hike and bike trail through the Nebraska Department of Roads transportation enhancement program.
The project was 90 percent complete in the planning stages when it was transferred from state to federal stimulus money. This had additional requirements and made it necessary to redo some paperwork originally submitted pushing the project back another year.
The Village of Axtell was awarded $162,145 for an 8-foot wide trail that connects the city park at the north end of main street with Mosaic’s recreational area. The village originally was to provide a 20 percent local match but because of a change in stimulus funds they didn’t have to come up with the matching funds. The only additional cost to the village was approximately $25,000 for engineering fees.
The trail will be open year round, and provided weather is good, is expected to be a well-used addition to the community.
