Axtell Holds Off Late S-E-M Rally

Axtell’s girls knocked Sumner-Eddyville-Miller from the unbeaten ranks posting a hard-earned 48-43 win over the now 10-1 Lady Mustangs. The Cats’ third win in-a-row advances them to 6-5.

Axtell led 14-12 after one period. The cats aggressive man-to-man defense and full court pressure forced five turnovers, and at the offensive end Trinity Houchin potted three treys.

Jesse Bertrand’s bucket just before the buzzer sounded to end the second period helped Axtell to a 10-5 advantage and a halftime lead of 24-17. Lexie Eckhoff was 4 of 4 on FTs and added a bucket for six points and Bertrand scored the other four. The Cats’ defense again induced five turnovers and allowed only one second shot.
