Axtell Tops Elwood With Wild Comeback

The Axtell Lady Cats basketball team exploded in the fourth quarter to come from nine back and beat Elwood 47-45.
Both teams came in to the game at Elwood with records of 6-11 and got off to an even start.
The offenses traded baskets throughout the first, with Elwood maintaining a slight lead from the outset and held on to lead 15-12 at the end of the first quarter.
The second frame was dead even, with the offenses running efficiently, and neither defense able to string together enough stops to pull away. Axtell kept it close, matching Elwood shot for shot, but could not build a lead.
The second quarter ended in a 15-15 tie, leaving the   down 30-27 going into the halftime break.
At the outset of the third quarter, Axtell came out flat and Elwood extended the lead. The Cats struggled to regain traction, battling on defense to keep the game within reach.
Elwood played their best defensive quarter of the game, holding Axtell to just four points in the third quarter, scoring 10 themselves and building a 40-31 lead going into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter was a very different game, as Axtell came out aggressive, forcing Elwood turnovers and taking advantage of every mistake to pull closer.
Elwood struggled to run their offense through the high-pressure attack Axtell threw at them during the last quarter and the margin shrunk, seemingly with each Axtell possession.
Axtell maintained the momentum throughout the final quarter, out scoring Elwood 16-5. The Wildcats pulled even with Elwood late in the fourth and finally drained a basket in the final minute to go ahead for good.
