Axtell’s boys had a great day and won, not unexpectedly, their first state Class D cross country championship on October 25 at the Kearney Country Club. The Cats scored 69 points to better David City Aquinas (80), St. Paul (93) and the other 15 scored teams. The race included 151 boys.
There were no surprises in Axtell’s individual performances as they were strong all season and this day was no different. Senior Lincoln Trent excelled the entire fall and, although he narrowly missed his goal of class gold, did claim the second place medal turning in a 17:05. Junior Jaron Bergstrom continued to be the other half of the Cats’ one-two punch as he worked his way to finish fourth at 17:15. Senior Elijah Lopez was 18th at 17:51 and senior Zach Hinrichs came in 89th at 19:03 as the fourth scorer. Sophomore Jonathan Lorenzo (110th, 19:35) and freshman Cooper Miller (117th, 19:44) were also members of the championship team.
