Axtell won the subdistrict and looked ahead to the district final by defeating Pleasanton 52-48 on February 27, again at Kearney Catholic. The Cats climbed to 18-6 and were matched up as the 12th seed against fifth-seeded Paxton (20-3) in a game played March 3 at Gothenburg with the winner advancing to the state tournament in Lincoln on March 12-14.
In a game of runs, Axtell’s huge second/third quarter run provided enough of a cushion to allow the Cats to fend off the Bulldogs.
Pleasanton led 12-9 at the end of the opening quarter as neither team shot efficiently, along with some turnovers mixed in. Axtell’s last field goal of the period came at the five minute mark and the misfiring started and continued into the first two and a half minutes of the second quarter, a stretch of 15 possessions in which the Cats scored only via three for four at the foul line.
