The Minden Whippets, Axtell Wildcats and Wilcox-Hildreth Falcons competed in the 2012 Nebraska Schools Association Track and Field Championships May 18 and 19 in Omaha at Burke Stadium.
The area athletes produced seven state medals in Classes B and D.
Brandon Benson of Axtell closed out his senior season in style. Benson set a new state and state meet record in the D boys pole vault on Saturday.
Benson was the state record holder after going 15’4″ earlier in the year and bettered that late in the final day of state.
Benson cleared 15’4.75″ on his first attempt to set the new standard and then moved the bar up to 15’8″ and was unsuccessful. Benson was second in all classes only bested by Class A Steven Cahoy of Grand Island Senior High going 15’8″.
