Cats, Falcons Sending 18 Participants To State

The weather couldn’t stop the Class D-8 district track meet held in Wilcox on Wednesday. The teams battled through the rain delay and the Axtell Wildcats and Wilcox-Hildreth Falcons will be sending numerous athletes to the 2011 Nebraska State Track and Field Championships in Omaha on Friday, May 20 and Saturday, May 21 at Omaha Burke.
The Axtell boys were the district champions racking up 127 points to win the trophy. SEM was second with 84 followed by Amherst with 78. The Falcon boys finished in sixth place with 67 points.
Axtell will be sending 9 qualifiers and the Falcons will be taking 2 to compete in Class D starting on Friday.
Leading the way for the district champion Cats was Brandon Benson who will be going to state in four events. Benson won gold medals in the 100, 200 and pole vault with times and marks of 11.2, 23.2 and 13’8″. Benson was also part of the Cats 4×100 winning relay in a time of 45.1 with teammates Kameron Jauken, Jordan Miller and Heath Anderbery.
Anderbery will be off to state also in the pole vault with a second place finish (13’0″) and a silver in the 400-meters in a time of 53.9. Anderbery was also a member of the Cats gold medal winning 4×400 relay (3:42.2) with Jake Jelden, Miller and Shafer Fox.
