Cats Fall In District Final To Overton
The Axtell Wildcats boys basketball team gave the Overton Eagles a fight in the first half but the state-rated Eagles had too much firepower in the second half pulling away for a 62-43 victory.
The Cats came on in the second half of the season but their season would come to an end in the Class D1-5 district title game on March 1 at Kearney Catholic High School.
The Cats found themselves down early to the Eagles in the first period, 7-2, but started their own rally. Two baskets by Brandon Benson and another from Erik Lundeen trimmed the lead down to 11-8.
Overton answered with a pair of free throws to go ahead 13-8 but Karter Rush’s putback basket and a Bryce Runge leaner in the lane got Axtell to within one point, 13-12. Lundeen gave the Cats their first lead of the game as the senior post scored underneath the hoop to lift Axtell to a first period lead 14-13.
