Axtell gave top-seeded and highly-rated Kenesaw all it could handle but the Blue Devils prevailed 55-48 in the D1-7 subdistrict semis on February 22 at Kenesaw. The Cats season ended at 10-13. Seniors Brennan Runge, Cal Johnson and Gavend Cole depart the program having been part of a four-year record of 50-46 (13-12, 18-7, 9-14, 10-13).
Runge leaves as the Axtell career scoring pacesetter accumulating 1,279 points. He was also one of the state’s prolific career three-point field goal makers knocking down 200. Johnson is the career (749) and one season (301) rebounding leader.
As for the game, the Cats put together a commendable first half. They led 16-10 after the first quarter and outscored Kenesaw 17-14 in the second to go in at halftime on top 33-24. Runge (14), Lindau (8) and Johnson (4) led Axtell’s scoring. The Cats connected on 56% of their shots from the floor in the opening two quarters.
