The Axtell Wildcats boys basketball team will be advancing on to play in the Class D1-5 final on Tuesday, March 1 after knocking off the fourth-seeded Kenesaw Blue Devils in the D1-9 subdistrict final held in Minden on Thursday.
Axtell (13-9) will face the Overton Eagles (18-4) at Kearney Catholic High School with tip off set for 7 p.m. for a berth in the Class D-1 boys state tournament March 10-12 in Lincoln.
The second-seeded Cats were led in the win over Kenesaw by Bryce Runge. Runge, a senior, scored a team-best 23 points and added eight rebounds and five steals. Erik Lundeen also reached double-digits with 13 points while Jordan Miller added nine.
The Cats jumped out to a quick nine point edge over Kenesaw after the first period, 19-10.
In the second, Axtell and Kenesaw played to a draw with both teams netting 14 points. Axtell went into halftime holding a 33-24 advantage.
The third period saw the game get tight. The Blue Devils put up a game-high 19 points in the third period while Axtell tried to keep it close ending with 11.
Axtell was able to maintain its small one point lead, 44-43, entering the fourth and final period.
