Churches Urged To Remain Closed During Community Leaders Meeting

Discussion during the April 27 community meeting of health officials, public leaders, businesses, and clergy focused on the anticipated lifting of restrictions for churches and several businesses.  Restrictions on physical church services is set to be removed starting May 4 which has parishioners anxious to return to the pews.

Members of the clergy asked for advice on whether to open church doors to the congregation when the restrictions are relaxed. Dr. Andy Craig, Dr. Doug Althouse, and Katie Mulligan of Two Rivers Public Health Department weighed in.

Dr. Craig explained that many of the guided health directives from the state are based on case numbers in the Lincoln and Omaha areas. Kearney County hasn’t seen its peak and our numbers are still on the rise as well as the area. He strongly advised the churches do not open to parishioners when the restrictions are lifted but to focus more on once the peak in terms of predicted cases for our area has passed, to begin those plans.
