Temperatures are dropping and wind chills are adding an extra bite to the air, but residents in several communities will be keeping warm this winter thanks to one local high school freshman and the generosity of her community. Mattie Kamery of Minden is distributing winter coats to those in need from a coat drive she organized in December.
“I heard a church sermon about helping people in need and the week before that I had went to a leadership conference. They talked about being a leader is not just having an idea, but putting something in place. So with those two things combined, I thought of the coat drive because that week it had gotten really cods and we had went to Lincoln so I was thinking about the people there that didn’t have coats when it was cold. So I put together the coat drive,” Kamery said.
In addition to inviting family, friends, and members of the community to donate new and gently used coats, Kamery organized a bake sale to gather as much support for her mission as possible.
