Competitive Gaming Providing Students Opportunities In Minden, Wilcox-Hildreth
High school eSports is growing in popularity across the state. Minden Public Schools and Wilcox-Hildreth Public Schools joined the Nebraska Schools eSport Association this year to provide students the opportunity to take part in the competitive gaming trend.
In Minden, a Gaming Club established last year evolved into an eSports team with the introduction of coach Nate Porter and membership in the NSeSA. As a gamer himself, Porter is confident in his ability to teach his team the skills necessary to be successful in competition and in life.
“What I’m trying to do here is to teach kids not just video gaming, we’re teaching them social skills and trying to teach them how to work together to make a game plan. I take it pretty seriously. I want the kids to come in and learn something,” Porter said. “You can go home and play video games all you want and be really good, but you need to learn how to play on a team. It teaches them some extra life skills.”
