The Minden City Council revisited the subject of a change to the speed limit on First Street during the November 19 regular meeting. Jeff Palik from Olsson Associates spoke to the issue from an engineering standpoint.
A resident from Minden West Estates requested the council consider changing the speed limit on the west end of First Street to 25 mph for the safety of children living in the area. Minden Police Department began a traffic study of the area and Olssen Associates was asked about restrictions on lowering the speed limit because of the speed limit on County roads that intersect First Street.
State statute restricts dropping posted speed limits by more than 20 mph. Palik explained that statute doesn’t apply to this situation because there is a four way stop at the intersection of First Street and 31 Road. A preliminary engineering study revealed the 85th percentile speed at 35 mph. That finding along with the rural setting of that portion of roadway doesn’t support a need to lower the speed limit.
