Council Considers South Substation Rebuild Options

The Minden City Council heard from NPPD about the south substation rebuild project during the November 1 regular meeting. Although the transformer is still in relatively good shape, the switch equipment is obsolete. The goal is to rebuild the substation and install new switch gear equipment while utilizing the transmitter for another ten years.

Five rebuild options were presented to the council for consideration. The six column substation on a new footprint option was recommended despite being the most expensive at $1,159,000. This option includes the opportunity to make it the base substation to serve the entire town in the future. It provides the best fit for long range flexibility and cost efficiencies in the future.

The council approved the NPPD project #5403961 for the south substation rebuild for $1,159,000. NPPD will move forward with the design phase of the project and procure materials and equipment. Contractor bidding is expected to take place in Spring 2022 with construction to start that Fall. The project is expected to be finished in early 2023.
