Council Discusses Pet Hens, Condemnation Status Updates

It’s still October, but downtown Minden is starting to look a lot like Christmas. Before getting to business at the October 21 Minden City Council meeting, Mayor Ted Griess recognized City employees for their efforts in hanging Christmas lights around the square and in controlling traffic for Bandfest.

Moving on, the first two agenda items were requested by citizens. Discussion concerning the keeping of hens in city limits was requested by Ann and Steve Shearer. The couple lives on E. 2nd Street and was gifted three pet hens in July.

Ann explained the hens live in a three by six foot bunny hutch with a small yard access space. They are pets and the Shearers have no intention of breeding them or selling eggs. They claim the animals don’t smell and don’t make a lot of noise. Ann told the council she understands banning roosters, but would like them to consider changing the ordinance to allow pet hens.
