“Survive and advance” is a mantra often used in postseason play. Axtell’s boys continued the season by escaping with a close 50-48 win over Bertrand on February 19 and then winning the D1-8 sub-district with a thrilling 42-41 defeat of Arapahoe on February 21 in the tournament at Southern Valley High School. The Cats record climbed to 13-11 as they moved on to the D1-3 district final against Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family played at St Paul High School on February 25 with the winner advancing to the state tournament. The contest was played after press time and will be reported on next week.
Bertrand had defeated Axtell by seven on the first weekend of the season and the Cats had to come back from an early deficit in this one as Bertrand was on top 16-5 after one period. Axtell started chipping away, however, outscoring the Vikings 11-8 in the second cutting Bertrand’s lead to eight, 24-16, at halftime.
By the end of the third a couple more points had been sliced off the margin as Axtell’s 15-13 edge left Bertrand up 37-31. Then the Cats 19-11 advantage in the fourth allowed them to eke out the victory.
