Dawgs Whip Dusters

The Minden Whippets boys basketball team dished out a little payback to the Holdrege Dusters from its loss last year on their home court.
The Whippets dismantled the under-manned Duster squad by 42 points, 72-30, in front on a full house in C.L. Jones Gymnasium.
Minden improved its record to 12-1 as the Dawgs will head into the Southwest Conference tournament on Thursday at home as the top-seeded team.
Carson Blum paced three players in double-digits with a team-high 19 points. Christian Schwenka added 14 points and RJ Watson completed the trio with 11 points.
The Whippets cruised to a 14-4 lead over Holdrege early in the first period thanks to Watson with a quick five points while Blum had four points and Schwenka three.
Derek Kissinger also got into the action with four points in the period as his layup widened the Minden lead to 16-4. Isaac Carlson and Blum closed out the first period scoring each hitting a jump shot and then Blum knocking down a three-pointer.
Minden’s lead was 23-6 over the Dusters going into the second quarter. In the second stanza, Thomas Sinsel got into the scoring column with a steal and layup followed by four straight points from Blum to go ahead 29-8. Blum and Watson knocked down back to back three balls as Minden pushed its lead to 23 points, 35-12, with just over two minutes left in the first half. Schwenka ended the second with five straight points including hitting his first three-pointer of the season from the top of the key.
Minden lead Holdrege by 24 points at halftime, 40-16.
Minden let off the gas pedal in the third quarter. Schwenka scored four more points while Blum and Jonas Lovin each buried a three as Minden’s lead grew to 32 points, 50-18 with 3:35 left in the period. The Whippets would score nine more points to close out the period in which Minden was ahead of Holdrege by 37, 59-22, going into the fourth and final period.
