Dean Orcutt

A Graveside Service and Interment for Dean W. Orcutt was held on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastor Jean Clayton officiating.  Military Honors will be provided by the Martin-Horn American Legion Post #66 in conjunction with the United States Navy Funeral Honors Team.

Dean Warren Orcutt, 82 years of age, of Holdrege, died on Sunday, November 21, 2021, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege.  Dean was born on September 7, 1939, in Minden, Nebraska, the second of three children, born to Donald K. and Doris L. (Scheuneman) Orcutt. Dean attended and graduated from Minden Public Schools in 1957.

On September 17, 1957, Dean was inducted into the United States Navy at the Commandant Ninth Naval District, Great Lakes, Illinois.  He served aboard the USS Oriskany at San Diego, California, and was a Jet Aircraft Servicer and a golden gloves boxer. While stationed in the Philippines, he met and married Pilar Apinardo.  After his honorable discharge in 1962, the couple made their home in Holdrege until her passing. To this union three children were born: Dean, Jr., Patrick, and Lisa.

On April 20, 1978, Dean was united in marriage to Cassandra (Cass) Pearson at the All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege. Together they continued to raise their family in Holdrege. He enjoyed spending summer weekends at their summer cabin in Harlan County and traveling; most recently spending winter months in South Padre Island. He enjoyed playing golf and cards with his friends, prior to his illness.

He worked for the City of Holdrege for twenty-five years, later becoming the Utility Coordinator. He later owned and operated Orcutt Sanitation and Sewer Service until his retirement.

He was very involved in the Holdrege community. He was proud to be one of the first EMTs in service to the volunteer fire department. He was a member and past president of the Eagles Club; past Commander of the Legion Club; member and past president of the Holdrege Country Club; and a member of the Elks Club. He also held leadership positions with the AWWA-Nebraska section.

Dean will be remembered for his humor, kindness, and work ethic. He could fix anything or knew a guy who could. He truly never met a stranger and he was quick to help out anyone in need. If he knew you, he teased you and probably said something politically incorrect. He loved to tell stories, and tell them again. He loved his family and they loved him.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Jean Warner; and Janet Danburg; his first wife, Pilar; his mother-in-law and father-in-law Kate and Del Pearson; two brothers-in-law:  Wes Warner; and Brad Pearson; one nephew, Dean Warner; many friends; and spoiled dogs.

Dean is survived by his wife, Cass Orcutt; children:  Dean Orcutt, Jr. and his wife, Shannon, Patrick Orcutt and his wife, Cheryl; and Lisa Swift and her husband Gabe; seven grandchildren:  Farren Nelson and her husband, Jason; Meghan Orcutt; Ethan Orcutt; Tate Orcutt; Payton Orcutt; Carson Orcutt; and Cassandra (CJ) Swift; step-mother-in-law, Ruth Pearson; three sisters-in-law: Pam Nyberg; Judy Pearson; and Shelly Kayton and her husband, Curtis; six great-grandchildren; along with a host of nieces and nephews, many crazy cousins, and friends.
