Dora M. Horsley, 89, a long time Minden resident, passed away on Thursday, October 27, 2022 at Kearney Regional Medical Center – Bryan Health in Kearney. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 3, 2022 at First Presbyterian Church (7th Street & Lincoln Avenue, Hastings, Nebraska) with Rev. Greg Allen-Pickett officiating. Private family interment will be held at the Minden Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials in Dora’s honor are kindly suggested to First Presbyterian Church in Hastings or to Start Over Rover animal rescue in Hastings. Arrangements are under the care of Craig Funeral Home in Minden.
Dora Marlene Brooks-Horsley the fifth child and only daughter of Henry and Elsie Brooks was born on the family farm northwest of Minden Nebraska on January 11, 1933. Dora grew up and lived the majority of her life in this area. Dora attended country schools, two years of high school in Minden and graduated from Axtell high school in 1951.
On September 27, 1957, she married Melvin Horsley at her parents’ farm home. To this union three children were born, two daughters and a son, Laurie, Carol and Thaine. Dora and Mel settled into a life of farming, raising crops, livestock and children. The farm operation was accomplished with the aid of extended family and many neighboring friends.
Mel passed in April of 1993 and Dora moved into Minden. At this time, she joined the Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Minden and was an active Presbyterian for the rest of her life.
After retiring from farming Dora worked as a dietary aid at Bethany Home and volunteered at “The Closet” and for the “Green Thumb” program, all in Minden.
As Dora’s sight became worsened by Macular Degeneration, she gave up driving, sold her home and moved to the Village Terrace, Good Samaritan Village, Hastings Nebraska five years ago. She joined the First Presbyterian Church in Hastings and greatly enjoyed her association with it, the people and worshiping her Lord.
After a fall and declining health Dora moved to Mother Hull home in Kearney Nebraska. She was taken to the Kearney Regional Hospital October 23, 2022, suffering from multiple myeloma and passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus late in the night of Thursday October 27, 2022.
Dora enjoyed school and was very active in high school. Many of her classmates were lifelong friends. Family was very much a part of her life with her children and grandchildren the focus of her love and attention. Dora loved nature, her yard, gardens and especially animals. Be it cows, pigs, chickens, cats, dogs or even Laurie’s pet gopher.
Dora was preceded in death by her husband, parents, father and mother-in-law Harold and Ruth Horsley, brothers and sister in laws Richard and Mildred Brooks, Gene and Margaret Brooks, brother Milton Brooks. Brother-in-law Ralph and Bonnie Horsley-Burton.
Survivors include brother and wife Harry and Irene Brooks of Hutchinson Kansas. Daughter and husband Laurie and Brian Johnson of rural Minden Nebraska. Daughter Carol Von-Minden of Kearney Nebraska Son and wife Thaine and Julie Horsley of Ord Nebraska. Grandchildren Cassandra and husband Brent Wells of Axtell Nebraska, Clarissa and husband Mitchell Sloggett of Minden Nebraska, Michelle and husband Cody Muzzey of Ravenna Nebraska, Jennifer VonMinden of Beatrice, James VonMinden of Kearney and Jordan Horsley. Great grandchildren Ryleigh and Madison Wells. Ruby Sloggett. Jackson Muzzy. David VonMinden. Diedrich, Abby, Eva and Otto VonMinden.
Survivors also include an extended family of many nieces and nephews, friends and special friend Rose Burchell.
