Axtell’s girls had just three leads in the area Fort Kearny Conference contest with Wilcox-Hildreth—all in the last four minutes of the fourth quarter—but their third lead was the one that mattered most. It came with no time on the clock from a made free throw by Lexie Eckhoff, giving the Lady Cats a one-point victory, 38-37, over the Lady Falcons in Wilcox’s beautiful new (this season) gym on January 22. Axtell moved to 7-9 with its third consecutive win while Wilcox-Hildreth fell to 8-7.
In the opening quarter, the Falcons scored on their first three possessions, and five of their first eight, but Axtell got points intermittently to hang around. McKinley Ritner’s three-pointer for W-H at 1:08 was the final scoring of the period as the Falcons led 13-10. Brooke Quadhamer had six points and Sarah Jensen four for W-H and for Axtell Jacey Smidt and Abby Snell each nailed three-pointers.
