Edgecombe’s Buzzer Beater Edges Wildcats, 69-68

Ben Edgecombe made Minden’s first and last buckets of the game, the final one off a missed free throw rebound at the buzzer as the Whippets pulled out an exciting 69-68 victory over Axtell on December 27 in the first round of the Axtell Holiday Tournament. Minden climbed to 2-5 and the Cats slipped to 5-3. The Whippets shot very well in the opening quarter and raced to a 19-11 lead. Ethan Riley and Dylan Janda scored six apiece and Dawson Lockhorn drilled the first of his four three-pointers on the afternoon in the first for Minden with Tyler Danburg netting six and Brennan Runge canning a three for Axtell. The Cats led 9-8 midway through the period, their last lead until seconds remained in the game. By halftime, Minden had a 36-23 lead using a second quarter advantage of 17-12. Janda’s three-pointer at 2:30 staked the Whippets to their largest lead of the game, 34-18. Riley scored seven and Lockhorn and Ryan Johnson also nailed three-pointers for Minden while Danburg (4 points), and Runge and Calvin Johnson (3 points each) paced Axtell.
