Editor’s Spiel
This past weekend, I wit- nessed an American tradition, the passing on of paternal pyro- mania. In other words, fathers telling sons, “light here, make go boom.”
Men have been teaching this lesson to their kids since long before President Whitmore (Independence Day, 1996) delivered the most inspirational speech since the Declaration of Independence was penned, “We shall not go quietly into the night! We shall not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on, we’re going to survive. Today we celebrate our Independence Day.” *sniffle* That gets me every time.
But there is something truly great about fathers and sons blowing stuff up together. Yes, I know women shoot off fire- works too, and that’s great, but watching a man light a fuse takes us back to the days when Tom Hanks danced around the bonfire he had made in the movie “Cast Away” and yelling to no one “ I have made fire!”
