Funeral Services for Evalyn M. Harms were held on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hildreth, Nebraska with Pastor Caroline Keenan and Chaplain Kathy Doiel officiating. Interment followed at the Wilcox Cemetery, Wilcox, Nebraska.

Evalyn Marie Harms, 96 years of age, of Holdrege, Nebraska, formerly of Wilcox, Nebraska, passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2021, at Holdrege Memorial Homes in Holdrege. Evalyn was born on July 11, 1924, six miles north and two miles west of Republican City, Nebraska, in Harlan County, the youngest of four children, born to John William and Martha Katrina (Asche) Shelton. She was baptized on October 2, 1924, at her parents’ home and was later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in rural Republican City on May 26, 1940. Evalyn received her primary education from Cannonville Rural School District in Harlan County and later attended and graduated from Huntley High School with the class of 1941.
On September 6, 1942, Evalyn was united in marriage to Albert E. Harms at the Peace Lutheran Church in Alma, Nebraska. The couple made their home on a farm two miles east of Ragan, Nebraska. In 1946, the couple moved to a farm 4 ¼ miles south and 1 mile west of Wilcox, and engaged in farming and raised livestock.
In 1972, the couple moved into Wilcox. From 1974 through 2001 Evalyn worked at the Wilcox Public Schools, she started as a dishwasher and later ended her career there as a Cook. Even after her retirement in 2001, she continued to volunteer for the School. Evalyn was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church which later became Trinity Lutheran Church in Hildreth, and served with the Lutheran Ladies Circles, and the WDWCC – Women’s Division of Wilcox Chamber of Commerce.
Evalyn enjoyed walking and having coffee with the neighbor gals, playing bingo and other games, doing jigsaw puzzles, and reading. But most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Evalyn was preceded in death by her parents and husband; brother, Alvin Shelton; two sisters: Hattie Brodil and her husband, Rudy; and Norma Henry and her husband, Hugh; Brothers-in-law: Bill Harms and his wife, Louise; Alvin Harms and his wife, Virginia; Raymond Harms and his wife, Gracia; Leroy Sundquist; Emil Harms and his wife, Mary Jo; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Woollen and her husband, William.
Evalyn is survived by her four children: Kathy Norman and her husband, Kent of Wilcox; and three sons: Donald Harms and his wife, Mary Lee of Orange Beach, Alabama; Earl Harms of Wilcox; and Albert C. “Al” Harms, Jr. of Wilcox; six grandchildren: Jennifer Foster and her husband, Steve of Suwanee, Georgia; Stephanie Harms and her husband, Tom of Arden Hills, Minnesota; Melissa Leabo and her husband Kirk of Woodbury, Minnesota; Doug Harms and his wife, Amanda of Atlanta, Georgia; Melanie Bergsten and her husband, Russell of Kearney, Nebraska; Shanda Pouk and her husband, Joe of Holdrege; 16 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law: Dora Mae Sundquist of Holdrege; along with other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held on Monday, March 1, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Wilcox.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Evalyn’s honor and kindly suggested to the family for later designation.
