Wilcox-Hildreth handled with relative ease what potentially was to be one of its regular season’s stiffer challenges as the Falcons defeated Deshler 56-20 on August 31 at Hildreth. W-H, now 2-0, had an open date on September 7 before returning to play at St. Edward on September 14.
The Falcons led 40-8 after the first quarter by scoring five touchdowns four different ways, all from long distance. AJ Jenkins started the onslaught with a 33-yard TD run. Next, following a Deshler touchdown pass of five yards, he took the Dragons’ kickoff all the way back 50 yards. A few minutes later Jenkins returned a Deshler fumble 30 yards to paydirt. He Tacked on his fourth TD of the quarter with a 60-yard run. The final TD of the period was a 47-yard pass play from Bryce Tobiassen to Clayton Nichols. Sure-footed Sidney Gruwell booted the two-point conversion after all five scores.
In the second quarter Deshler sandwiched two short scoring passes of one and ten yards around a 44-yard scoring sprint by Riley Ritner. Gruwell again added the conversion kick and, although being outscored 12-8 in the period, the Falcons were in command at halftime 48-20.
