Geraldine Stirtz Receives 2011 National Service Award

Geraldine Stirtz, of Minden, was recently honored as a 2011 Impact Award recipient for her service at the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
The National Service Award was presented to Stirtz at the 2011 First Lady’s Outstanding Community Service Award Luncheon held at the Thompson Alumni Center at the University of Nebraska-Omaha on April 28.
Gerry has been the coordinator for the Office of Service-Learning on the University of Nebraska Kearney (UNK) campus since 1990.  She has mentored countless numbers of students, college faculty, PreK-12 teachers, and AmeriCorps/VISTA members through completion of their service-learning experiences, as well as functioning as the primary university-community organization liaison to coordinate service learning projects.
She recruits and oversees the AmeriCorps program on campus, and has been an integral part of the Midwest Consortium for Service-Learning in Higher Education, providing leadership and grant-writing skills that have netted ongoing financial support for theses programs.
