On June 10, Lenny Ginder of Minden was honored with the VFW State Volunteer of the Year award at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Annual Convention in Kearney. The award is given to one non-member each year for volunteering their time to help the community because the VFW recognizes the importance of community service to America. Ginder was nominated by VFW Post 5537 Commander Matt Cavanaugh for his many years as a volunteer for the Special Olympics.
“My sister joined the program when she was eight and we started going as a family to watch. When I was 14 or 15 the head coach at the time, Mary Johnson, asked me if I wanted to start going as a chaperone,” Ginder said. “I can’t really remember the first time I went as a helper, but I never missed a State Game from then on.”
