Giving Whippet Athletics A “Boost”
Working tirelessly throughout the year, the Minden Booster club contributes extra funding for high school athletics through fund raising activities and membership drives.
Annually, the Booster Club donates $3,000 to Minden High School which is divided into three $1,000 gifts to a specific sports team or cheerleading or dance. Sports, cheerleading and dance are on a rotating basis to receive funding. In 2009, the club’s funding enabled the volleyball team to purchase new uniforms, the wrestling team to purchase new warm-ups and the girls golf team to purchase new golf bags.
In 2010, the girl’s softball team, track team and cheerleaders will each be the recipients of $1,000 gifts from the Booster Club.
Through their sale of name brand apparel, stadium chairs, blankets and hats to the student body, parents, and other Whippet fans, the Booster Club is able to give back a part of every sale to Minden’s student-athletes.
In addition to assisting in the purchase of sports equipment, the Booster Club provides funding to each team during district and state competition to purchase meals. A $50 donation is made when a team participates in district competition and a $100 donation is given when teams qualify for state.
As a fall fund raiser, the Booster Club will be raffling off two Husker football tickets to the coveted Texas/Nebraska match up on October 16. The Minden Coffeehouse generously donated this pair of priceless tickets for the raffle. The drawing will be held on Friday, Oct. 8 at halftime of the Whippet vs. Gibbon football game. Tickets are available at First Bank, Minden Exchange Bank or at the Booster Club Apparel table. In addition to raffles, other fund raisers include the pig wrestling at the Kearney County Fair.
Booster Club memberships are an important source of funding for the club. The money raised from membership sales goes into the general fund and is donated back to the school or is used to purchase outside equipment/uniforms/supplies requested by the administration and coaches.
Through Sept. 24, those who sign up to be a member are automatically entered to win a Minden Whippet jacket.
Beyond providing funding for equipment and uniforms, the Booster Club also donates two $500 scholarships at the end of the school year to one male and one female athlete. The scholarship recipients are chosen by the Booster Club board members through an application process.
To close out each year, the Booster Club provides a speaker and a meal for the all-sports banquet for athletes, students, parents, coaches, administration and the community.
Booster Club board members serve a three year term. The 2010 officers are: President, Scott Olsen; Vice President, Clark Bauer; Secretary, Janell Shelton; Treasurer, Nancee Sinsel; Sales, Lonna Rowse; Eric Hauserman, Matt Alberts, Amy Kissinger, Paul Steen.
