Many Kearney County residents are anxious for the weather to warm and the snow to melt, but ten year old Carter Hardenbrook of rural Axtell is enjoying the freezing temperatures by practicing his hockey skills on the ice rink his family built in their backyard.
Carter has been skating and playing hockey since he was three years old. With the support of his parents, Nate and Brandi Hardenbrook, he plays on the Junior Storm hockey team in Kearney. His love of the sport inspired Nate to build a rink in their backyard so Carter can spend more time on the ice without the commute to Kearney.
“This is the second year my husband has put together a rink,” Brandi said. “Sometimes my son likes to play video games too much so it’s good to get him out of the house in the cold weather. And he really loves it.”
