History Brought Back To Life

Restoration of the Minden Public Schools bell was revealed to Whippet fans on September 4 during the home football game against Boone Central. The bell has inspired school spirit for 47 years.

The bell was purchased by John Garrett’s parents from the Methodist Church in Newark in 1972. The following year the Minden High School class of 1973 bought it and donated the bell to the school.

MHS seniors Brad Malcom and John Garrett built a trailer for the bell. The day it was completed they took it around the square making as much noise as possible. Honking, hooting, and hollering, the excited students pulled the bell and trailer behind John’s purple and white Willys Jeep. As they crossed Brown Avenue they hit a bump which caused the bell to fall out of the cradle it was resting on.
