On Sunday afternoon, music spilled out of the doors of Trinity Lutheran Church onto the sidewalk and street in Axtell. It wasn’t just any music. It was Handel’s Messiah and the voices of young and old, seasoned and new, rising up in beautiful artistry under the direction of one passionate man, J. Rodney Wendell.
Members of the chorus from the Axtell Area Oratorio Society had gathered to rehearse for their upcoming annual performance of the sacred Oratorio, Messiah by George Frideric Handel. The concert will be performed as it has been for fifty-six years on Palm Sunday, April 13, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the Merryman Performing Arts Center in Kearney.
Sunday was a special day for the group as it was also Wendell’s 85th birthday and after rehearsal, they gathered for cookies and coffee and memories. Several who gathered to celebrate were part of the inaugural 1958 performance including Mr. Wendell and his wife Delores, Carol and Roger Wells, Dorothy Berggren, and Jill Johnson.
